Amongst other things, this means you’ll be responsible for checking that doors are shut properly, walkways are clear and that there are no safety hazards on board. You’ll be the central point of contact, should any problem happen – so a calm but decisive attitude is a real must. Ultimately, you’ll deliver a service that puts customers first.

Profile

Mark says... The most challenging role for a train manager is that you’ve got to be able to multi task. You’ve got to be responsible for the safety of the passengers from A to B. You’ve then got to have the point of customer care, that you could have an empty train or 600 passengers on the train and each person’s got to have the same level of commitment that you can provide and treat each passenger as an individual.

The benefits, I feel personally it’s like working for a large family. Everybody is so friendly and professional in how they actually deliver the day to day running of the railway environment.

The train manager training is just short of six, seven months in length which comprises of an awful lot of heavy exams. You’ve then got route questions, you’ve got customer service on ticket skills, you’ve got your how to diffuse an argument, when I’m with trainees I take them out and about and you’re then firing questions to the trainees as to what would actually happen if, creating different scenarios but also making sure that they are then confident and safe to be able to work that train.

The qualities required for a train manager, you’ve got to be calm, you’ve got to be confident but you mustn’t be too confident, you’ve got to be able to multi task and balance everything but it’s that confident approach because you are responsible for the running of the train.

If I can make one passenger have a memorable journey, if I can convey them from A to B safely and promptly without incurring any delays, disruption, inconvenience and make that person tell somebody else, to want to travel on the train, they my job as a train manager would be successful.
