Safety

Safety comes first at First Great Western. Across our Safety teams, you’ll find an absolute dedication to achieving the highest levels of performance. Nothing less than excellence will do.

We’re responsible for developing and maintaining the vitally important Safety Management Systems that keep things running across our network. To achieve this, we actively liaise with a variety of agencies and authorities, from the Association of Train Operating Companies to the British Transport Police. Our work involves producing company safety, operating and security procedures, and recording accident and incident information to the Health and Safety Executive and Rail Accident Investigation Branch. We also undertake safety audits, instigate major risk assessments and produce emergency plans. Not least, we co-ordinate research projects and apply all of our knowledge to provide the best occupational health and safety advice.

It’s also our role to ensure that all operational incidents that happen within our company are investigated and concluded to a consistently high standard. We’re a key point of contact with a range of external bodies and agencies. Specifically, we represent First Great Western at formal inquires. We also chair internal inquiries and set inquiry remits or agree them with the relevant authorities. In addition, we’re on hand to provide help and guidance to management on any operational safety matter.
