Train Planning

The Train Planning Unit sits at the core of railway operations. It’s our role to turn commercial service specifications which incorporate customer needs into comprehensive operational plans.

This planning involves analysing how we can best make use of capacity on the national network and how we can deploy our rolling stock and train crews so they meet the needs of passengers.

The plans we’re tasked to deliver need to strike a balance between delivering customer needs, productively using resources and being operationally robust. While there is a specific focus on the major timetable change at May and December each year, the majority of our work involves amending weekend services to cope with engineering work, special events and bank holidays.
